The eastern part of the state falls along the Atlantic Ocean and is considered a humid subtropical climate. The central Piedmont region is characterized by densely populated countrysides broken by low mountain ranges. The western portion is part of the Appalachian Mountain range and has a subtropical highland climate. The most populated cities in the state are Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Cary, High Point, and Wilmington. Each has over 100,000 residents within its confines, making up three major metropolitan areas.

Cape Fear Community College, Durham Technical Community College, and Wilkes Community College offer programs in pharmacy technology. The Wilkes offering is a 92-hour training course and Cape Fear offers a one-year diploma training program. Durham has a school that includes both a diploma and a certificate option. Other schools with offerings in this field include Campbell University, University of North Carolina, and Wingate University, each preparing the individual to assist a licensed pharmacist.
